The latest movie in the ?Fast And Furious? is now coming to cinema screens almost simultaneously worldwide. In this fifth and last film a good number of autos came to grief? and not just those crashed by Vin Diesel and Paul walker.
340 cars were on the list drawn up by the producers. But all in all around 500 hundred vehicles appear on the screen. And according to ?car coordinator? Dennis McCarthy only between 50 and 60 autos could be driven away when shooting ended.
Most of the cars, like this Nissan 370Z, were radically modified for the requirements of filming.
The recourse to digital special effects? at least where car crashes are shown? was minimal. ?The stunt scenes are about 95 percent real?, says McCarthy, ?whenever you see an auto speed through the scene or get tossed into the air, that?s a real car you are seeing.?
The 2011 Dodge Charger is more or less in the form it would be when driven out of the dealer?s showroom. Only a differential lock and modified steering have been installed.
There were Dodge engineers on hand to adjust the motor management system and the traction control.
Over the years McCarthy has built up an invaluable network of contacts. This means that for him it is relatively easy to get hold of a rarity like this 1972 Nissan Skyline GT-R even if it takes a couple of weeks to find it.
Sung Kang in the role of Han is once again featured in the fifth movie of the ?F&F? franchise, seen here with a Subaru WRX STI. In general, however, there are fewer Japanese sports cars to be seen in the latest sequel.
Three Nissan 370Z models were prepared for ?Fast Five?. Although the giant air coolers and the nitrous oxide tanks may be misleading, the cars remain stock apart from the addition of differential locks. The car is running on Advan 20 inch allows and this helps the 370Z to contribute to the film some amazing drifting sequences.
The most expensive car to be involved in the filming is this Koenigsegg CCX Carbon Fiber Edition which McCarthy claims cost more than two million Dollars.
This very exotic vehicle is a Canadian armoured personnel carrier called the Gurka F5, The company that made it had only one example available which the film makers instantly rented.
Two lighter F5 models, replicas without armour plating and with a different chassis, were made for the filming.
The older car models, like this Ford GT40, were completely re-built for the filming with new motors, drive trains and many components from motor sport.
Whether this applies in the case of this shabby Ford Mustang?
McCarthy is on the receiving end of a lot of ?hate mail? because he has wrecked so many old Chargers. But he does not acquire lovingly restored veterans but buys rusty old banger which nobody would dream of renovating.

One must hope that this DeTomaso Pantera did not fall victim to some spectacular but terminal stunt.
Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster in one of the many actions scenes from the movie, soon to blaze across cinema screens everywhere.
